ABSTRACT: We start everyday with current events or news items. This stimulates great interest to read the newspaper, listen to the radio or watch television news. To vary this idea, a bulletin board with a huge calendar was displayed (see attached). Each day has a styrofoam burger box on it. Inside each burger box is a historical event from that day of the month in history. These historical moments are discussed each day. A weekly sheet with 5-7 questions is handed out to the students. These questions are concerning the historical moments of that week. Further research in the library will give the answers to these questions. Each student is listed on a chart and the number of questions completed is recorded. Special incentives are given at the completion of these questions i.e. one math lesson does not need to be done, listening to a special story with ear phones, or special time on our classroom computer. These special options can change and are given out when an agreed upon number of questions are answered. This activity stimulates current events, historical events, and research, while challenging students to dig deeper into a subject area.
