1998 Minnesota Youth Summit Planning Committee
This year's Youth Summit Planning Committee Members are (in alphabethical
order):

Darien Johnson, North High School
Rashan Moore, North High School
Winter Sumpter, South High School
The Planning Committee met on November 17 and listened to presentations
by:

Tom Krueger, Leadership Assistant to Senator Ember Reichgott Junge.
Mr. Krueger presented the students with information on the Graduated Drivers
Licenses and Youth Access to Alcohol (kiddie booze).

Senator David Knutson. Senator Knutson presented the students with
legislation that will be introduced that would open the Abuse and Neglect
Hearings (CHIPS) in Juvenile Court.

Christina Rich, Minnesota Planning. Ms. Rich presented information
on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (including potential penalties for women who
use alcohol while pregnant.
After a lively discussion, the Committee voted for Senator Knutson's bill
on the Abuse and Neglect Hearings. About a week after their decision,
the MN Court system became involved in this issue, considering opening
hearings in pilot sites. As a result, pending legislation is on hold.
The second place was the Graduated Drivers License, which became the
focus of this year's Summit
